It often falls to diaspora communities living in Canada to teach Canadians about the history of their homelands. Such was the case in the development of the Young Canadians’ Peace Dialogue on Sri Lanka.
The Peace Dialogue was a direct result of the lack of trust between Tamil- and Sinhalese-Canadians in the aftermath of the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka. With the support of the Mosaic Institute, university students of Tamil, Sinhalese and Muslim descent developed a series of events that encouraged young Canadians from the various Sri Lankan communities to rediscover their shared interests in working together for the benefit of all Sri Lankans.
BuildChange is the second – more practical – phase of the Dialogues, where participants work to give the gift of water to Sri Lankans affected by war by using the collective goodwill of the broader Sri Lankan Diaspora.
